Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs)

Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) are electronic roadside signs that detect the speed of approaching vehicles and display it back to drivers in real time. They are designed to encourage safer driving by making motorists immediately aware when they exceed the limit. SIDs also record anonymised speed data, which helps the Parish Council work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) and the Police to monitor problem areas and plan future safety measures.

In 2026, Oakley & Deane Parish Council obtained a Section 72 licence from HCC to purchase and install a total of five SIDs across Oakley. HCC, working with their contractor Enerveo, approved 19 locations for SID deployment. The Council is supported by Traffic Technology Ltd, who rotate the devices every two months in line with the approved deployment plan.
